From concept to prototype: the birth of a scooter

June 2023
On June 1st, in celebration of Children’s Day, Mariann and Beata, second-year students of industrial design at the Estonian Academy of Arts, orchestrated a scooter workshop in Vivita studio in Tallinn, Estonia. Children were given the opportunity to conceive and craft their own unique scooter designs, filling a perceived gap in the market. Through collaborative effort, three initial scooter prototypes were brought to fruition.

Mattias and Kirill opted not to embark on creating an entirely new scooter design. Instead, they chose to enhance Kirill’s existing scooter by integrating various accessories. Among these additions were an MP3 player with headphones, a lighting system, and a speedometer, augmenting the functionality of the trick scooter.

Sarah and Richard devised a scooter equipped with a gas pedal and a brake mechanism. Their creation was further adorned with LaMuu stickers, as it was envisioned to facilitate trips to LaMuu’s ice cream shop. Additionally, the scooter boasted oversized wheels to navigate obstacles encountered on the journey.

Ruudi and Sören conceptualised a scooter design featuring an armchair and a sofa, accompanied by amenities such as a refrigerator. This innovative approach aimed to redefine the scooter experience by offering comfort and convenience.

In addition to conceptualising and constructing their scooters, the children honed their presentation skills through delivering elevator pitches, effectively showcasing their creative endeavors.
